Some of my fondest memories are when, as a little girl in the 70's, my mom would surprise us with fondue night. That Fondue cookbook is from my personal collection and it inspired this gift vignette.
It was so exciting to thread bits of steak onto the long forks and let them cook in hot oil, warmed by a flame at the dinner table. She would prepare some dipping sauces and it was really fun and delicious! Thinking back, I am in awe of my mother’s level of trust allowing me, a rambunctious 6 year old, to play with a pointed spear, raw meat and be in close proximity to an open pot of flame broiled boiling oil. She had me learning to bake cookies at three or four and likely felt that the ripe old age 6 I had the maturity to handle dinner with a dose of danger. Thank you mom!
The hand painted bamboo screen was acquired for another gift, but once I found a fondue pot that matched the cheery deep orange blossoms, it was reassigned. After some serious scouring of vendors, an amazing vintage fork set in a cool little holder manifested in the same honey color as the painted bamboo screen. It was meant to be!
